eating yogurt every day, this delicious food can protect you from various
mental issues, including depression. This was revealed in a new medical study.
The research published in the journal NPJ Mental Health Research indicated that
beneficial bacteria in the gut help maintain mental health. Probiotics found in
yogurt, cheese, and other fermented foods or supplements can help prevent
depression and other mental health issues. The study noted that consuming
probiotic-rich foods makes it easier to prevent negative feelings from
escalating. The research involved young, healthy individuals who were given
daily probiotic supplements for a month. These supplements contained bacteria
like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, which are also found in yogurt and
cheese.
Researchers
monitored the moods of individuals on a daily basis and instructed them to
write down their feelings. After two weeks of probiotic use, participants
reported a decrease in the intensity of negative emotions. In contrast,
individuals in a separate group were given placebo tablets, showing no
improvement. This demonstrated that beneficial bacteria affect our mood.
The researchers
noted that probiotics only reduce negative emotions, while antidepressant
medications decrease both negative and positive emotions. They stated that they
do not suggest probiotics be considered a substitute for antidepressants, but
consuming yogurt, cheese, or supplements is not harmful.
They reported
that the use of probiotics reduces the severity of issues such as stress or
anxiety, while helping to prevent depression. Similarly, these bacteria also
assist in analyzing emotional details, making people more emotionally
intelligent and making it easier for them to understand cues.
