The risk of heart attacks among youth in Pakistan has increased.
Heart diseases, including heart
attacks, have started to rise to dangerous levels among the youth in Pakistan,
with 70 percent of young people suffering from obesity and poor cholesterol
levels. According to the report, cardiologist Professor Bashir Hanif stated
that the risk of heart attacks among youth has increased due to obesity and cholesterol,
and the process of fat accumulation in the arteries has begun at an early age
for most individuals, leading to premature heart attacks. He mentioned that
approximately 1.5 billion rupees (5 million US dollars) are being spent on a
10-year research study related to heart diseases in collaboration with Gates
Pharma.
The report states that 80 percent
of women and 70 percent of men are affected by obesity, over 70 percent of
individuals have dangerously high bad cholesterol levels, and more than half
have unusually low good cholesterol levels. This rate has never been seen in
any youth population worldwide before. According to the research report, some
young people's arteries have started to narrow as early as the age of 20, and
heart attacks are becoming a common occurrence among individuals in their 30s
and 40s. Dr. Bashir Hanif mentioned that we are seeing cases where even 19 or
20-year-old young people are having heart attacks.
This research involves over 2,000
men and women from across the country, aged between 35 and 65 years, who are
undergoing complete medical screening, blood tests, genetic testing, and CT
angiography of the arteries, with 42 percent of individuals having high blood
pressure and 23 percent having diabetes. According to Dr. Bashir Hanif, this
research is not limited to traditional factors such as smoking or poor diet;
there is an urgent need to develop a new cardiovascular risk score in Pakistan,
as existing models from Western countries are designed for individuals over 60
years old, while people in Pakistan are suffering from heart diseases even
before the age of 40.
